I am in an active down-sizing, de-acquiring mode. The bibliophile’s spring cleaning. Our shelves got too stuffed and things were piling. Not good for books, not good for this reader. I want to winnow things down, to weed out those fancies that passed before I read the book, and get to the good stuff, patiently still waiting on the shelf.
Winnowing is an education, too: Why did I buy that? Oooo, I remember when I was interested in XYZ. The space is finite, so some books must inevitably be weeded — even if I never read them.
There are good reasons to keep books: because I want to learn about this thing, for this project, say, or because this person recommended it. Also, would this book be hard to acquire again if I do finally want to read it? But books bought on impulse, or because of some nebulous “should” and never read, are ones I hope find happy homes other than mine.
